Transverse section of the right upper limb, level with the wrist. The lower aspect of the proximal stump is revealed. In the middle of the picture the capitate bone (2) comes into sight. On both sides of the capitate bone the metacarpal bones can be seen (1). Anterior to the capitate, in the carpal canal, notice the tendons of the Flexor digitorum superficialis (4) and profundus (3). Radial to them, the median nerve (5) and tendon of the Flexor pollicis longus can also be seen (6). Of the muscles of the thenar, observe the Opponens pollicis (7) and the Abductor pollicis brevis (8). On the palm of the hand the following structures are outlined: ulnar artery and nerve (10), Flexor digiti minimi brevis (13), Abductor digiti minimi (12) and more deep, the Opponens digiti minimi (11). The above mentioned three muscles are belonging to the muscles of the hypothenar. In addition, notice the dorsal and radially located tendon of Abductor pollicis longus (14), the radial artery and vein (9) and the cut surface of the tendon of the Extensor pollicis brevis (15). Of the dorsal superficial structures, the tendons of the Extensor digitorum (16) and the tendon of the Extensor digiti minimi (17) are also labelled.
